The Academic Engagement Programme aims to support media-related research projects that can provide valuable inputs into our policy formulation process.

Eligibility
The AEP is targeted at undergraduates and postgraduates who are pursuing media-related courses, as well as academics specialising in media-related subjects and/or have a strong interest in deepening the research base on media-related issues, based in local tertiary institutions and research think tanks. Two main types of research studies are funded under the AEP:

Research Topics
The type of projects that will be considered for funding must support MDA’s desired outcomes for the media sector, and can be centred on either socio-cultural or economic premises. Broad topics of interest may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Measurement / predictive models for economic performance of the media sector
- Developing the creative capacity of the media sector
- Media convergence and implications on economy, society and regulators
- Media literacy
- Media consumption

Process
Successful applicants will be awarded up to a maximum of $1,000 for undergraduate projects and $100,000 for postgraduate projects. The actual grant disbursed will be based on the submission of receipts and other evidence of expenditure, and subject to approval by MDA. The basic evaluation framework is as follows:
- Relevance of the research with respect to MDA’s roles and responsibilities, and current trends and developments in the media industry
- Potential to deliver genuine and high-level insights on the media sector
- Applicability of research findings to support MDA’s policy formulation process
- Rigour of research methodology and analytical techniques

Terms & Conditions
Grant recipients will have the rights to publish and present their findings in journals, conferences, seminars and other forms of media or channels, in their own capacity, subject to the terms and conditions in the agreement with MDA. Grant recipients should make available the primary data of their research to MDA for non-commercial use upon completion of the research project under the terms and conditions in the agreement with MDA. MDA may release such data for further use by other researchers 3 years after the completion of the research project. Grant recipients may be asked to share their research findings at suitable platforms determined by MDA.
