Media Fiesta: Promoting Media for Work, Learning and Play

Media Fiesta is an annual, month-long nationwide initiative by MDA ans PICO Art International. This annual festival of media events provides Singaporeans with fun and engaging opportunities to experience and learn more about media, and how they can use media in a responsible and discerning way, for work, learning and play.

The inaugural Media Fiesta held in March 2009 was hosted by MDA and organised by Pico International. The event received the strong support of 43 partners and sponsors, and garnered some $1.2 million worth of media coverage.

Through all these activities and programmes, the Media Fiesta was able to reach out to some 78,000 Singaporeans from all walks of life, and enable them to better appreciate the variety of media choices for everyone.

Highlights of Media Fiesta 2009

The highlight of the month-long festival was a four-day thematic, experiential showcase at Marina Square. It featured a slew of media content and technologies – in animation, games, publishing, film, broadcast and Interactive Digital Media – reflecting the diversity of Singapore’s evolving media landscape.

Film lovers found a unique cinematic experience with the Shaw-Online Sky Cinema, which screened local content such as Anthony Chen’s award-winning Ah Ma. The more savvy visitors tried out the latest media content and technologies offered by Razor TV, STOMP, SingTel, StarHub and Microsoft MSN.

Students were inspired by successful media professionals and entrepreneurs at the Inspiration Box. Others found entertainment through the music and games stations.

Visitors also learnt more about media classification and public service programming. They came up close and personal with their favorite celebrities including Perfect Cut 2 cast members Thomas Ong and Edmund Chen.

They were treated to live jamming by Live N Loaded bands such as Jack & Rai and The Marilyns. Celebrities such as Gurmit Singh, Adrian Pang, Michelle Chia and Fiona Xie shared their behind-the-scenes experience at the Actors’ Room. More than 150 aspiring actors took part in the live audition for a role in Fighting Spiders.

Apart from the main event, 40 other fringe events were held throughout March. These included movie screenings, open houses, animation workshops and games competitions, which offered more content choices and opportunities for everyone.
