Promotional Trailers for Films

Promotional trailers are film advertisements for upcoming films that are usually shown before a movie begins, at outdoor video walls, at cinema lobbies and/or other public area.

Classification Required

All promotional trailers of films must be submitted for classification to the Board of Film Censors (BFC).

Promotional trailers are classified and rated the same way as films and videos. All promotional materials should reflect the rating and consumer advice, where available.

Guidelines for Trailers and Print Publicity

Film and video distributors/companies should observe the following guidelines when screening promotional trailers and displaying print publicity materials:

·         Trailers rated PG13 should not be shown prior to a G-rated film or PG-rated film, or in public places such as video walls. Examples are trailers depicting some horror, mild coarse language or violence

·         Trailers of NC16 and M18-rated films may be screened during films of a lower rating and/or at cinema lobbies and at video walls. However, in all cases, the content should be suitable for a general audience, including children. Film distributors should also observe any conditions imposed by the BFC on the screening of the trailers

·         Promotional trailers of films rated R21 should not be screened when films of lower classifications are shown

·         Trailers classified as NC16 and above can only be exhibited to persons who meet the stipulated age requirement.

·         All advertisements that are meant for theatrical and/or public exhibition have to be submitted to the BFC for classification
