Singapore’s Music Industry
Singapore is home to more than 100 music companies, societies and schools.
Among its musical exports are highly sought-after singers with regional appeal such as Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, Tanya Chua; songwriters, lyricists and producers such as Dick Lee, Liang Wern Fook, Lee Wei Song, Lee Si Song, Billy Koh, Eric Ng, Martin Tang, Xiaohan, etc.; and music arrangers and concert directors including Iskandar Ismail and Goh Kheng Long.
Meanwhile, acclaimed music composers like Ricky Ho have scored for international film projects, and companies such as De Claffer and Home Studio have also scored for television and games projects.
MDA recognises the music industry’s potential to enhance business and creative developments across the broadcast, film, games and animation industries. To this end, MDA has initiated a call for proposals from the industry, such that MDA could:
- • collaborate to promote and export Singapore music
- • position Singapore as a digital music hub for Asia
- • establish companies providing professional music services in songwriting, scoring, performing, producing, arranging, publishing and licensing for media content.
In line with efforts to promote content that celebrates Singapore talents and values, MDA has also supported television productions and series such as Live 'n' Loaded on Channel 5, which showcased Singapore's indie music bands; as well as Frequency Of The City and the kids' musical Schoolhouse Rockz, both on the okto channel.
