Guidelines for Classifying Films

The Film Classification Guidelines have been prepared to raise awareness and understanding of the Board of Film Censors (BFC) film classification process.

The guidelines aim to reflect community standards while ensuring that due consideration are given to the films artistic, educational or literary merit.

The purpose of classification is to protect the young while allowing greater freedom of choice for adults.

 

Ratings

There are six ratings in film classification:

 


When classifying content, classifiers look at the theme, content, presentation and impact of the film as a whole while taking the following factors into consideration:

  • Violence
  • Sex
  • Nudity
  • Language
  • Drug and Substance Abuse
  • Horror

Service Standards

1.    Videos submitted for classification within 50 working days*

2.    Videos submitted as Repeat titles for classification within 5
        working days*

3.    Films for theatrical release submitted for classification within 10
       working days*

To enable us to process your applications within the service standards, please ensure that your applications meet the Film and Video Submission Guidelines  respectively. For films and videos that require consultation, the classification period may be longer than the time frame stated above.
