An insight into what we do, our role as a promotional and regulatory body and our core values.
The Media Development Authority (MDA) was formed on 1 January 2003 by the merger of Singapore Broadcasting Authority, the Films and Publications Department and the Singapore Film Commission, to champion the development of a vibrant media sector in Singapore: one that nurtures homegrown media enterprises and attracts direct foreign investment for economic growth, new jobs and greater economic dynamism.
With the proliferation of media content and different delivery platforms, it has become increasingly important to involve the industry and the public in formulating regulation. Co-regulation – or joint regulation – allows industry players to give their inputs and feedback.
Consultation is an important cornerstone of classification as everyone is a media user or consumer in some way– whether watching a movie, reading a book or playing a video game. Greater involvement by the community not only contributes to more robust guidelines, but also enables the public to be better informed. More than 260 members of the public from all walks of life help MDA to regularly review content codes and guidelines to meet with changing needs and expectations.
